The 17th edition of the Headies Awards continues to shine a spotlight on the exceptional talents shaping the West African music landscape. Among the most prestigious accolades of the night, the Best West African Artist of the Year category stands out, recognizing artists who have made remarkable contributions to the continent’s music scene throughout the year.

Celebrating solo acts and groups of West African origin, this award acknowledges creativity, influence, and the power to shape the region’s soundscape while extending their reach to the international stage. With a legacy of excellence, the competition remains fierce, showcasing the region’s diversity and musical brilliance.

Black Sherif (Ghana)

Black Sherif’s meteoric rise from Konongo’s streets to global acclaim is a testament to his talent and dedication. Known for his distinctive blend of hip-hop, rap, and highlife, he claimed the Best West African Artist of the Year award at the 2023 Headies Awards. His victory over esteemed nominees like Gyakie, Camidoh, and Liberia’s The Therapist marked a defining moment in his career.

In 2023, Black Sherif also earned a nomination in the Lyricist on the Roll category, competing against respected Nigerian lyricists like Ladipoe and Vector, further cementing his status as a versatile artist. Collaborations with prominent Nigerian musicians such as Burna Boy, Fireboy DML, Larry Gaga, and Poco Lee have only broadened his reach, uniting Ghanaian and Nigerian audiences through dynamic artistry.

King Promise (Ghana)

Ghanaian sensation King Promise continues to make his mark within the Afrobeats and highlife genres. Renowned for his silky vocals and captivating melodies, he has garnered widespread acclaim, including a nomination for Best West African Artist of the Year at the 2024 Headies.

His hit single “Terminator” has surpassed 200 million streams, with a remix featuring Nigerian artist Young John boosting its popularity. Collaborations with artists like Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Simi, and Omah Lay have further expanded his influence across the African music diaspora.

Himra (Ivory Coast)

Representing Ivory Coast, Himra has rapidly ascended the West African music scene with his innovative approach to drill rap. Despite being a newcomer to the Headies Awards, his nomination reflects the growing recognition of his talent.

Tracks such as “Monalisa” featuring Suspect 95 and the sensual “Sexy” demonstrate Himra’s ability to merge hard-hitting rap with diverse musical styles. His expanding popularity across Ivory Coast and West Africa suggests a promising future for the rising star.

Josey (Ivory Coast)

Josey, a prominent voice in Ivory Coast’s Afrobeat and Zouglou genres, is celebrated for her emotive vocal delivery and compelling storytelling. Her nomination at the 2024 Headies acknowledges her continued impact on the African music scene.

Her latest album, Vibration Universelle, features collaborations with acclaimed artists like Didi B and Innoss’B. Songs like “Démarrage,” “C’est Mon Année,” and “Tout Laisse” have garnered significant praise, with the latter recognized as one of the top West African tracks of the year by OkayAfrica.

Toofan (Togo)

The Togolese duo Toofan has consistently blended traditional rhythms with contemporary Afrobeat to create a unique and infectious sound. Their nomination for Best West African Artist of the Year underscores their growing influence across the continent.

Their 2024 hit “Tone” resonated throughout West Africa, while their collaboration with Congolese artist Fally Ipupa on “Ye Mama” further solidified their status as key players in the African music industry.
